Welcome New and Returning Vipers,
I am your Principal, Mr. Upshaw and I am excited to begin the 2016/2017 school year. Last year, Columbia Middle School became a new school with new culture and attitude. Respect, Responsibility and being Safe became the way our students conducted themselves throughout the year. WE had many great achievements last year. We are the only AVID certified middle school in the Adelanto Elementary School District. We participated in the High Desert Athletic league for the first time in many years and all our scholar/athletes showed great character. Our boys and girls basketball teams made the playoffs and both finished third in the entire High Desert. Our boys soccer team won the only High Desert League Championship for Adelanto Elementary School District. We had over 11 college field trips, weekly guest speakers and have six fully trained AVID tutors on staff.
This year again, we have many challenges ahead. Our student population is over 800 students up from 400. We have added 6th grade to our campus. We have added an additional eighteen new teachers. We’ve added additional electives classes to ensure our students are “College Bound” and “College Ready”. We will have Music/Band, Spanish, Industrial Tech, Robotics, AVID, ASB, Cheerleading, Dance and Honors classes. We encourage all of our students to get involved in our school activities.
If at any time someone is bothering you in person or on social media, please let an adult know. The information you share with staff is confidential and will only be used to ensure your safety and the safety of others. I have an open door policy and I encourage you to get to know me as I am not a Principal who stays in the office. You will see me at arrival, dismissal, lunch and passing periods, so again do not hesitate to say hello, if you have a question or concern. Let’s have a great school year and always, Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible! Go Vipers!
Assistant Principal's Message
Hello Viper Students and Families!
I am excited to welcome back our 8th grade students and welcome our new 6th and 7th grade stu-dents to middle school and to Columbia! I have the privilege of being your Assistant Principal this 2016-2017 school year and I look forward to creating an interactive and rewarding learning culture.
Having taught at Columbia for nine years I have witnessed the changes that Columbia has made over the years and I am ecstatic to see the positive momentum that Columbia has been building. Last year we focused on improving Columbia’s academic program, citizenship, and athletics program and CMS did a phenomenal job in all these areas!
In academics we focused on AVID strategies such as Cornell Notes and on creating a college culture. This year we plan to build on our AVID foundation. We will implement focused note-taking, content tutorials, philosophical chairs, Socratic seminars, and more. We will also continue to attend college field trips and have guest speakers and college tutors on campus to interact with our students.
Great strides were made in citizenship last year. Our CMS students and staff went to great lengths to build professional relationships with each other and we are looking forward to creating that same culture this year. Please know that the adults on campus are here to help you learn and to provide you with a safe environment to do so. If you have concerns about something happening on campus, please let administration know immediately so we can take steps to resolve the situation.
Administration will be looking to provide more recognition to our outstanding students and staff this year. We want to highlight students who come to school, are on time, ask questions, work hard, are positive, work with others, and more. We will also be implementing more competitions, clubs, and activities designed to allow CMS students and staff to interact and grow with one another. This will include our athletic and after school programs.
I believe in the strength of cooperation and in relationships and welcome parents, students, and all stakeholders to communicate their goals, concerns, and praises with me. I am dedicated to taking Columbia students to higher levels of engagement and interaction, and to helping all stakeholders to work together to create a positive school climate focused on learning and growing. Our goal is to provide our students with the skills they need to become deep thinkers who collaborate with others, ask questions to learn on higher levels, utilize technology to both inform yourself and others, and to be productive and empowered members of our diverse American society.
We KNOW our students are capable young people and so the staff at CMS will set high expectations for you and will provide you with the guidance needed to be successful at CMS and beyond. We believe in you and are excited for the many fantastic possibilities we have this year!
Again, welcome to Columbia students and parents! I look forward to a fantastic and productive school year! Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions! GoVipers!
